Mediation is an option for people who want to seek a negotiated resolution to their divorce as opposed to a litigated one. Mediation is a possibility whenever the two parties have the ability to work together and communicate to a degree.

In mediation, the two parties will meet with a trained mediator to resolve all divorce issues in a series of meetings. During those meetings, the mediator will help you define the matters that need to be resolved, such as child custody, child support, spousal support, and property division.

Mediation is an alternative to the adversarial court process, which often leads to disputes that are resolved by a family law judge. Mediation tends to be lower-cost, since the two parties hire one mediator instead of two lawyers. Mediation is also less time-consuming than a traditional divorce. It can be finalized within a short time after both parties reach an agreement. The results of mediation are not binding on either party unless both sides agree.
